Drabble no. 2
May. 21st, 2004 05:16 pmAd Mundo Exteriore,
Look, it's fluff! Teeth-rotting sap! In Korean, no less!
A little bit of background: Angelette and I are fans of Hot-Blooded Woman, a manhwa being scanslated by JanimeS. It's shoujo on crack--the main character, Haji, is a local high school gang leader, known as the infamous Doberman. She prides herself on her power and status in the school and her reputation among the other gangs. She gets into a motorcycle accident on her way to a fight and ends up possessing the body of another girl, Aram, who is frail, beautiful, rich, (and a shallow, self-absorbed, little moron). Aram has a crush on Shinwoo, who's one of those oujisama rich boys so classic to the shoujo genre, but he despises her and tells her to wear glasses, put her hair in dorky braids, and generally look as ugly as possible, if she wants to go to the same school as him. Why she listens to him is beyond me, but she does all this and trails after Shinwoo like a little dog and ends up in a coma after attempting suicide. Anyway, Haji ends up possessing her body, and typically, is upset because now she finds herself weak and sickly. (I mean, this is a girl who can beat up most guys and likes to do three hundred chin-ups everyday to stay in shape.) She starts regaining her strength, dresses normally (and causes half the boys in the school to suddenly fall in love with Aram's natural beauty, although Haji's totally oblivious), and readies herself to challenge Shinwoo for position as the jjang (gangster leader) of the school. Shinwoo is naturally completely confused and ends up falling in love with her, not in the least because this new "Aram" seems utterly uninterested in him in a romantic sense. (Well, naturally, because Haji believes that one of the rules of being a jjang is to avoid getting involved with anyone until s/he turns eighteen.)
Anyway, finally, Shinwoo defeats Aram in a fisticuffs duel, once and for all, and she gives up on the jjang position. In the meantime, however, she's started to recognize, in her own hilariously muddled way, how attractive Shinwoo is ("he has a face that looks good from every angle"), and thus their pseudo-courtship begins. It's full of hilarious misunderstandings on both sides--Shinwoo is incapable of expressing his emotions, and Haji is just emotionally immature to begin with. (Then the whole series just gets a lot more twisted, and there's intergang politics and rape and messed-up childhoods and homicidal maniacs...Haji eventually returns to her own body, but she's lost all memories of her time as Aram.)
I wanted to write something creative in this drabble, but all I've really managed was to come up with a "typical" encounter between the two. Angelette asked for something humorous, and um, I tried, but it's hard to have the requisite dry wit in Korean. Actually, it's just hard, period, to write well in Korean--I don't have the wide vocabulary, and frankly, the style of Korean prose has very different standards and mechanics than English. I'm not even sure what would be good writing in Korean, just that this isn't it. Ah well, it made for good practice at least. I'll put up a translation eventually, so the rest of the friends list can boggle at how bland and boring my writing sounds when I switch languages. >_<
웃어라, 박신우!, for
aetherangelette
Next up, Weiß Kreuz, for
rimedragona. Let's see if I can manage to pull off a combat scene and Crawford's precognition at the same time! >_<
(Drabble requests are technically still open, by the way. Since my main two finals are over, I'll probably actually finish them more quickly now. I plan to spend my entire weekend writing and working on the Cloud skin. So yeah...even if you've requested already, feel free to ask again--if you want to see some more writing from me that is.)

Date: 2004-05-23 08:40 am (UTC)Can't really say much about the drabble either, since I can't read Korean.
Oh yeah, it might be just my browser, but those drag down menus in Have Faith aren't working properly for me...

Date: 2004-05-23 09:35 am (UTC)I'll go check it out, but all I know is that it should work fine in IE 6.
And yes, one more convert! ^________^ I'll post up a translation for the rest of my friends list later today, but the manhwa is much better than my labored little drabble.
