Lowell House, on the Feast of St. Leo the Great
Gratuitous icon post! To celebrate the fantastic last line of chapter 18, in Ravages of Time. ^_^ For those not in the know, the masked man on the left with the forked eyebrows is Zhuge Liang, styled Kongming, otherwise known as Tari's eternal crush. The face in the foreground belongs to Sima Yi, one of the many pretty boys of the series and the only man who has ever outwitted Kongming. ^_^ The two Chinese characters stand for "Crouching Dragon" (or in other translations, "Sleeping Dragon").
If you look at my icon page, I also have another new icon of Han Ye-myeong from Wa!, which is the manhwa that I promised to FST but never did. Wa! is utter fluff and silly shoujo nonsense, but that doesn't stop me from thinking Ye-myeong is utterly cool (he's manipulative! and sadistic! and bad at being romantic!). Wa! won my approval simply because the handsome prince character not only turned out to be rather dumb (in a cute kind of way, but still dumb) but also failed to win the heroine's heart. Well, Ye-myeong is a prince-type too, I suppose, but he starts off as the "loner" of the class that everyone despises, so I suppose we can give the author that much credit.
In other news, have I ever told you how much I love my lab? The one I work at, I mean. I had a long conversation with the CGR fellow, i.e. the principal investigator (known as P.I. to those acquainted with the science jargon), who is a woman I very much admire. She's from east Germany and got her doctorate here in the U.S., as a single mother. That takes determination and personal strength, in my opinion. She is also ultraliberal, loves trying out food/music/whatnot from other cultures, and just has a great, easygoing personality. And what I probably like best is that her attitude towards science is that of total curiosity about everything--it is very much an academic lab that isn't afraid to tackle the really interesting questions without caring about applicability or practicality--and that we get involved in all these collaborative projects that are genuinely fascinating. (Well, to me at least.) But I mean, even outside of science, it's so great that I can talk to her about anything. Also, the post-docs and tech staff in the lab are really great people; I found a little post-it on my coat wishing me good luck for my chemistry midterm from one of the post-docs. Things like that remind me why I love working there. ^_^
Interesting news: so my friend Jenny frequents these language tables (she's a polyglot and speaks German, Swedish and French, in addition to some Spanish), and one of the people she's met at German Table works as a librarian at Widener who's in charge of ordering German and Scandinavian books. Apparently, in order to create a representative selection, the German collection includes a volume on...(get this) homosexual erotic massage techniques. O_O ::coughs:: Yes, so if you're a gay German man (or have a friend who is a gay German man) intent on seducing your beloved with massages, then you don't need to go to a specialized sex store after all. No, for Widener accomodates all needs! Even those who desperately need a guide to homoerotic massage! What next, all the translations of the Kama Sutra? ^_^
Yours &c.
