Music musing
Nov. 23rd, 2004 08:33 pmLowell House, on the Feast of St. Clement I
Am on chapter 9 of One Piece, and my immediate thoughts: "Zoro! Santouryu! Bwahahahahaha!" Ahem. Sorry. I'm exhilarated right now because I'm going home tomorrow! And the much-dreaded physics midterm is finally over. I realized while handing in the exam that I did one of the problems incorrectly, but all things considered, I think I did better than I expected, especially since I did not study sufficiently. >_< I don't think I've studied sufficiently for an exam since I started college--well, excepting Korean and maybe the Rome of Augustus midterm.
aetherangelette just sent me 7th Issue, the comeback album by 서태지 (Seo Taiji). I adore this album. Don't ask me why. It's a bit embarrassing because 서태지 is to Korean pop what, say, Justin Timberlake would be to American pop. Although he definitely has more of a rock/alternative sound, and after singing Heffy End at karaoke one too many times, I now know that his music videos look like Asian hip hop. >_< Nevertheless, he has the same huge crowd of mindless adoring fangirls. I would like to say that I'm one of them, except I have no idea what he looks like, and I haven't heard any of his other albums. I just downloaded Heffy End from a rotation site and became completely obsessed. (It holds the number one spot on my iTunes Top 50 Most Played list at 27 times. >_>) Anyway, the other 7th Issue tracks are great too, at least by my entirely irrational schema for judging music. They all remind me of other songs though, which doesn't say much for their originality.
Which reminds me, why on earth am I holding onto these 동방신기 (Dongbangshingi) tracks? I mean, their music epitomizes all the reasons why I avoided K-pop for so long. >_< Also, it really disturbs me to hear a male voice sing, "I want to be your kitten," although it is slightly less shocking in Korean.
In the ongoing saga of Tari actually starting to develop some contemporary music tastes (outside of anime and soundtracks, that is), I've decided that I like:
1. Various sorts of electronic music, although nothing too, er, hardcore. All thanks to Epitonic, of course. I still can't tell the difference between trance and downtempo and techno, but whatever, synthesizers are really cool! (Why the Ran FST and the Kamio Akira FST are fighting for dominance in my playlist. Along with half a dozen other FSTs too.)
2. Various sorts of European pop and rock. Again, nothing too hardcore. In particular, a certain style of depressed alternative rock that sounds faintly drugged out. Or very exuberant and fast, when not depressed. Er. See Kent. 서태지 and Cherry Filter are like that too, I think, although in a bizarrely Korean way.
3. Melodic and slightly folk-sounding Asian pop music.
4. Authentic world folk/traditional music. I downloaded all these Norwegian traditional music tracks and they are awesome. What is it with me and Scandinavia, these days?
5. Most of all: 20th century "classical" music. Also courtesy of Epitonic. I went on a mad Phillip Glass downloading spree at Amazon. Also, for some reason beyond my comprehension, I really like strange instrumentation/orchestration that make my ears ring.
I conclude that for Christmas, I want CDs by any or all of the following artists: Mylene Farmer, Kent (more, I mean), the Rasmus, Travis, Phillip Glass, Aartika, Orbital, Sigur Ros, Sun Yan Zi, Cherry Filter, Page.
Afterthought: Frou Frou's DJ Encore remix of Breathe In is cooler than the original.
Back to One Piece and procrastinating on packing! I hate packing, by the way. I've decided to not even bother trying to start until tonight's HRKC "indoctrination" meeting is over. Don't ask. >_<
Yours &c.
Post-script: Although I do have to add that the kendo club, taken as an spatiotemporalhuman (yes, I just made up that word) entity, not merely its activities, its history or itscaricatures characters, practically writes itself as a melodramatic comedy. Comic melodrama? ^_^ Maybe that's why the end-of-year freshmen skits are always so funny. ::grins::
Post-post-script: I've just been asked by the Bureau of Study Counsel to tutor students in multivariable calculus. Should I do it? If it was out of the goodness of my own heart, I'd refuse without a qualm, but they're going to pay me, which is a different kettle of fish altogether. Only $12/hour but considering I only have about $300 to last me the rest of the semester, an extra $12 a week could give me some breathing room. Hm...all I remember about multivariable was how I learned it, but not what I was actually supposed to learn and absorb for the rest of my life. Although I suppose it shouldn't be that difficult to pick up again? ::ponders::

Date: 2004-11-24 08:04 am (UTC)Dongbangshingi.... That's another story... They scariee... HOT wannabees! Even though some of their melodies are nice... Lyrics, yes... I don't like. -.-
You should do some female artists! Like... Lulu, and Bada, and Park Ji Young...? and Lee Soo Young, and so so many more. Then again, I'm crazy. And we all know that.
RAWR!

Date: 2004-11-24 08:30 am (UTC)Seo Taiji is like Justin Timberlake in terms of popularity, not in terms of his actual music. And he is so not hard-core. You can't call that hard-core. Okay, maybe compared to, say, H.O.T., he sounds hard-core, but definitely not in the more universal scheme of things.
Dongbangshingi wouldn't bother me so much if they didn't begin every song with little breathy muttered comments in English like, "I love you so much. My little princess." I stop the song as soon as it starts playing because I can't stand them.
I DO like some female artists. Cherry Filter has female vocals and Page is definitely female. I don't like Park Ji Young; she rips off of Carmen and that is not allowed. Lee Soo Young is cool but not that cool. I like the one song I have by Loveholic and Park Ji Yoon and Chae Jung An. Actually, do you have any more Park Ji Yoon songs? ^_^;; I want.

Date: 2004-11-25 07:40 pm (UTC)We didn't go to the Cornell tournament because our captain sprained her groin muscle and also because our veteran members (including a highly vocal me) opposed going to a tournament in the middle of midterm season. We may show up at the Yale tournament in February though. And heh, no worries about not having a full team--last year us freshmen were on a three-person team and didn't win a single match. >_< Are you guys coming to the Shoryuhai in April? Please say yes! ^_^
Hurrah for being a biology major! It's insane, but yes, science is paradoxically a cruel but comforting mother. Glad to hear we've rescued you from the humanities. ^_~ All right, shall definitely call you one of these days and finish catching up.
