(I've just come back from a 6-hour session at the library--didn't even bother eating lunch--and now, I'm pretty sure that if you gave me reactants and told me the reaction name, I could quite possibly draw out a reasonable mechanism, as long as it wasn't of above average difficulty. On the other hand, if you gave me a synthesis product and starting materials, I would in no way be able to recognize any retrons. ;_; Even if the synthesis was of below average difficulty.)
