Yet more author appreciation
Mar. 15th, 2005 11:46 pmLowell House on the Feast of Ste. Louise de Marillac
Today is my parents' 30th wedding anniversary, and I remembered just in time to send them an e-card. Had a long chatty conversation with my mother about this and that. She's graciously granted me permission to buy myself an iPod ("As long as it's your money!"), so yay! In a few weeks, I may actually have free space on my computer again!
I am only on page 4 of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. I would like to sink into full-speed reading mode because it is indeed delicious, as Daera would say, but I still am in the midst of doing the biology follow-up, and I need to somehow figure out how to do the Korean presentation for tomorrow. >_> I have a feeling my sleep schedule doesn't match that of my partner because she hasn't contacted me. I really, really have no idea what I'm going to talk about or how to make the Powerpoint presentation...in short I'm screwed. Agh.
I'm pretty proud of myself for keeping up with this week-long meme. Only four more days and eight more authors to go!
Belated Fanfic Author Appreciation Week, day 3:
High-profile author rec: Aki at
absenceofmind (friends-only, but friends back automatically)
Aki is, how shall we put this, a genius. I've friended her relatively recently, but I've seen her rec'ed by everyone, everywhere for ages (on fandom-scale chronology, that is). I think her name comes up most often due to her Tenipuri fic, but I've discovered that she writes for many other fandoms as well.
Aki has this tendency to write the kind of fics that leave me breathless, as if I've returned from Wonderland, permanently unable to see the world in the same perspective again. I make it sound as if she writes fics that are controversial or push the limits, but that's not exactly the case: Aki writes very clean, almost classical fiction, with the right balance of dialogue, narrative, plot and characterization. But there's something about her style that absorbs your attention completely and submerges you in the world of the fic. Perhaps it's her masterful use of imagery, or perhaps it's the solidity of her characters, who seem so alive and human that you can hear them breathe. Whatever it is, it is beautiful and overwhelming, and I come out of reading her fics feeling somehow altered.
Her most recent Tenipuri fic Jinei, written for the first
subrosa_tennis challenge, was my favorite out of all the submissions (even before I knew she wrote it). I also recommend this untitled Gundam Wing fic, which left me gaping in awe, and Eleventh Hand, which I think is one of the best expressions of Akira/Hikaru that I've ever read. (She also has this original yaoi series called Lockers, which takes clichéd BeBoy scenarios and somehow manages to make them not only utterly plausible, but sheer excellent fiction. How does she do it? Answer: don't question, just read.)
Medium-profile author rec: Kismet at
tokyofish
Hm, Kismet isn't "low-profile", is she? (I keep asking this question.) Going by my rather arbitrary LJ "friends of" list size criteria, yes, but going by actual sense of fandom presence, definitely not. So, yes, another "medium-profile" because I am bad at judging these kinds of things. Maybe I should go by "really, really prolific" and "not-quite-so prolific" instead? Shall think on this issue and come to a decision tomorrow. Anyway, how did I discover Kismet's fanfiction? I remember seeing a link to her Big O fic on
animefics: Pianissimo. (I just went through all of
animefics archives to find that link. ^_^) I remember going back to it and reading it again and again, even though I hadn't ever watched Big O and had no idea who the characters were.
I think Pianissimo is in some ways a good example of what I like best about Kismet's fiction: she writes about love, in a different form for every story, and makes my cynical, unromantic self stop for a moment to wonder, "Oh, is that what it means to be in love?" Kismet does not write about love in terms of worn-out sentiment and token phrases; she makes it complex and emotional, at times painful, at times passionate. Her best love stories, I think, are bittersweet or melancholy, like Shadows and Twilight or the recently written Imitation of Life, but she also writes sweet scenes as well: Small Blessings. (As well as brilliant crack!fic, although I can't find a link right at the moment.)
Kismet is a very busy law student, so she doesn't write as often as I in my more selfish moments would wish, but she still writes regularly for a wide variety of fandoms. Actually, that reminds me of the other thing that I admire about Kismet: all the fandoms she follows! Is there an anime or manga series that she doesn't know about? ^_^ She's been writing a lot for Bleach lately (and of course, I couldn't be happier because Kismet writes Ichigo/Rukia perfectly, with the right touches of wry humor and genuine emotion), but when she was still doing her drabble-a-day experiment a few months back, I was amazed by the range of fandoms she wrote for. So be sure to check out her writing; there's a good chance she may have written something for your favorite fandom.
Yours &c.
Post-script: I want some more icons for series I don't already have: Death Note, Hikaru no Go, Bleach, HanaKimi, Shaman King, Prince of Tennis...anyone want to recommend specific artists who make icons for these series?
