Misfortunes

;_; I fell down the stairs and twisted my right ankle yesterday. Of all the worst luck! I thought it would be fine but I woke up this morning to excruciating soreness and limped my way to UHS, where they wrapped it up, took an X-ray (just to check there were no fractures), and gave me crutches. By the way, I am incompetent with crutches, which are a lot more tiring to use than I ever would have thought. My ankle is fine when motionless but protests at having any weight put on it, and there's this huge half-dollar-sized swollen lump on one side of my foot. When not using crutches, I limp about at an excruciatingly slow pace because my foot hates moving. The doctor advised me to take Aleve or Motrin, but is that necessary? I mean, it's not a debilitating chronic sort of pain...and painkillers make my head feel fuzzy.
I don't know how bad the sprain is because I've never sprained my ankle before (or, for that matter, had any sort of serious injury other than bruises and blisters) but I've been fervently praying that it will get better before the Shoryuhai. Literally. I'm so annoyed with myself. The first time I seriously injure myself, and it just has to be a week before a tournament! Even if it does get better in time for the Shoryuhai, I get the sinking feeling that I'll end up watching during the two last practices this weekend, which is loss of valuable kendo time. Argh, I was actually looking forward to practicing shiai this weekend. ;_;
Also, much, much retrospective sympathy for Daera, who sprained her ankle during the Gasshuku and has only really recently recovered. Now I know what she went through.
The self-pitying side of me is about to sink into melodramatic expressions of "Oh, why me?!" (not that it hasn't already), so please tell me something funny and sarcastic to restore my sense of perspective.
Yours &c.

Re: sorry
Date: 2005-04-14 09:03 pm (UTC)A lot of schools apply for funding to make it to the tournament so you can always try that. (We have teams from UCLA and UCSD coming after all.) Anyway, it's a shame you're not coming; the head shimpan is an 8th dan, and we have about 30 teams competing.
Good luck at Cleveland this weekend! ^_^

Date: 2005-04-17 05:06 pm (UTC)Anyway, what I said was basically that I just did the same thing -- I sprained my ankle somewhat badly (no fractures, but pain and swelling and not being able to walk) Saturday a week ago. We were doing a Sandhurst course run-through and I got almost all the way through before I twisted my ankle on a rock. So I sympathize. >.<
Also, do you have access to a physical therapy clinic? I went to physical therapy on Wednesday and it really helped. Part of the problem for me was that my ankle had stiffened up because I wasn't moving it, and that made it even harder to walk. So I went to the clinic and they moved it around and stretched it and now I can walk, which is eeee. And I have kind of the same thing -- I have the Sandhurst competition at the end of April, and now I don't know if I'll be able to do it. I'm kind of scared to, because if I reinjure it I might not be able to go to Airborne school.
Anyway, I'm really sorry you're hurt!
