Paper, or rather first draft of paper is nearing completion. The goal is to be finished before noon tomorrow so I can send it off to the post-doc to be looked over. In the meantime, this is the prologue of the Hikaru no Go fic requested by card_mistress. Finally figured out how to write it. Most of it's written already, but I'm posting in parts to allow myself time to edit. >_> Warning: AU in the sense of alternate storyline.

An Exorcism, prologue, for card_mistress

[part 1]

"Your turn, Sai," Hikaru mumbled sleepily, his eyes already closed. He yawned and let his head drop against one hand.

Sai tried to focus on the board but it was hard to distract himself from the panic as he felt himself fading, second by second. His translucent hands seemed to be losing color and blurring into insubstantial air before his eyes. "Hikaru," he said urgently. "/Hikaru/."

"Mmm?" Hikaru's eyes didn't open.

"Hikaru, please look at me. I think...I might be.../Hikaru/!"

His only response was a soft snore.

Sai's face crumpled as he clutched his disappearing fan. /Not yet, I can't go now. A thousand years is not enough, not when I haven't reached the Hand of God. Was Torajirou's sacrifice for nothing?/

Hikaru's head jerked but his eyes still remained half-closed. "Hurry up, Sai," he said with a sleepy sigh.

/More time...I need more time,/ Sai thought frantically. He could feel his already-thin presence in the world growing fainter. /My soul to any god who will grant me more time! Until I reach the Hand of God!/

"Done," whispered a voice, and the world began to tremble, to shake, then to quake so violently that Sai had to bury his face in his sleeves.

When he lifted his head again, he found himself on the other side of the /goban/, with two open /goke/ upturned on the floor, stones scattered at his feet. He blinked and raised a sleeve to rub at his eyes. The world seemed brighter, more garish and solid somehow...It was then he realized that he was no longer wearing his long court robes but a yellow cotton shirt like the ones that Hikaru preferred.

He stood up and stumbled over his numb feet. He made his way to the mirror over the dresser and stared at his face. It was familiar, more familiar than his own. The blond bangs, the wide grey eyes, the round cheeks--

Sai lifted his hands and looked at them in amazement. "I have a body," he said aloud to the empty room. He turned around. "Hikaru? Hikaru! Where are you?"

There was no reply.

1. The first character I first fell in love with: Hm...I don't know, actually. I think it's because I spent most of the first few volumes not liking any of the characters, and then suddenly falling in love with nearly all of them.
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Doumyoji
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't: Rui
4. The character I love that everyone else hates: Hm, I'm not sure...I guess Doumyoji, judging by most of my friends list.
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer: Shizuka. I used to think she was cool, but then got disappointed in the later volumes.
6. The character I would shag anytime: Soujirou. [/shallow]
7. The character I'd want to be like: Tsubaki-neesan! Or Shigeru.
8. The character I'd slap: Doumyoji (yes, despite my love for him)
9. A pairing that I love: Doumyoji/Tsukushi, Soujirou/Yuuki
10. A pairing that I despise: Anything that ruins my above two 'ships. >_>;;

Erm. I'm calm, really. And very eager to see the next chapter. It's an intriguing chapter, dramatic and mysterious at the same time. More, please.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don't: Never quite understood the love for Ryu. Or Hao, for that matter. That may be because I need to read more of the manga though.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates: ...who does everyone hate? (I haven't really been in the fandom enough to know.)
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer: Manta. Well, it's not that I hate him, but he hasn't really done much in the last volume I read.
6. The character I would shag anytime: Amidamaru
7. The character I'd want to be like: Anna XD
8. The character I'd slap: Marco and Jeanne
9. A pairing that I love: Yoh/Anna, of course.
10. A pairing that I despise: Hao/Anna, unless it's done by an author who manages to convince me against my will

Heh, it was a challenge, but definitely an interesting one. I'm only sorry it's taking me so long. ^_^;; Part of the reason was that I kept trying to cram everything into a oneshot and then finally realized it wouldn't fit and resigned myself to writing a multipart fic. ^_^ I'm so glad you like it! XD

1. The first character I first fell in love with: Ichigo, of course
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Renji
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't: Well, it's not that I don't understand the Orihime love...I just don't actively look for fic about her. (Gah, my secret's out. >_<)
4. The character I love that everyone else hates: I can't think of a character that everyone hates...
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer: Ishida...again, it's not that I don't like him but he's stopped being interesting to me during the Soul Society arc.
6. The character I would shag anytime: Byakuya. For purely shallow reasons, since he's a total prude.
7. The character I'd want to be like: Yoruichi! And at times, Rukia.
8. The character I'd slap: Don't know.
9. A pairing that I love: Chad/Karin (well, Ichigo/Rukia goes without saying)
10. A pairing that I despise: None really, unless it's badly written. My shipping preferences for Bleach are guidelines not dogmas. ^_^;;

1. The first character I first fell in love with: Akira, of course
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Touya Kouyo, and to a certain extent, Ochi, who really redeemed himself in my eyes during the Hokuto Cup trials
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't: I don't in fact like Kaga all that much, although I really like Kaga/Tsutsui as a pairing.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates: Well it's not that everyone hates Hong Suyeong, but he's so often overlooked. ;_;
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer: Sai. I sobbed over Sai's death, and I think it took me two years before Hikaru no Go stopped being mostly about Sai for me. But after a while, fandom convinced me to move on, and now Sai doesn't hold the pedestal position in my heart like the way he used to.
6. The character I would shag anytime: Isumi if he weren't secretly engaged to Waya.
7. The character I'd want to be like: Akira
8. The character I'd slap: Ochi when he's being arrogant.
9. A pairing that I love: Akira/Hikaru, my eternal OTP
10. A pairing that I despise: Ogata/Hikaru freaks me out, to tell the truth, although I still read rageprufrock's fic for them. Ogata should stick to Ashiwara, in my opinion, and of course Akira and Hikaru were meant for each other. XD

Er, I can try to answer the meme for LoGH based on the four episodes I've watched? XD;;

1. The first character I first fell in love with: Yang Wenli!
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: I don't think this quite applies, but I didn't like Reinhard in the first episode (Me at screen: "Alienating your subordinates is not exactly a sign of military genius!") but I liked him by the fourth.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't: Annerose. Maybe it was the character design that threw me off.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates: ...Not quite sure who people hate.
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer: I guess I really haven't watched enough of the show to say. ^_^;;
6. The character I would shag anytime: Yang Wenli, again
7. The character I'd want to be like: Yang Wenli, for the third time...I guess for variation's sake, I'd add Siegfried (because he is the perfect second-in-command, a role which I've always admired)
8. The character I'd slap: Reinhard
9. A pairing that I love: Reinhard/Siegfried, mostly because that's the only obvious pairing I've seen so far
10. A pairing that I despise: I guess I'll need to know more characters to be able to answer that. ^_^;;

4. The character I love that everyone else hates: I guess, Liu Bei? Not exactly a favorite character, but I'm fond of him at least.
