Lowell House, on the Feast of Ste. Catherine de Ricci

Yes, I'm still alive. Gasshuku started last Wednesday and won't be over until the day after tomorrow. My toe is not quite in normal condition but still fine enough for practice. In fact, today's my turn to lead practice, and I probably ought to go look at the menu sometime soon. I've also turned narcoleptic but more details on that later.

I've decided that writing about Gasshuku will serve nicely as my entry for [livejournal.com profile] naljwrimo2006. In the meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] ladydaera's been keeping a daily chronicle over at her journal.

Have been skimming the friends list but not doing such a good job of keeping up with the comments. ;_; At the moment, everything is on the back burner until after Gasshuku.

Yours &c.

Post-script: Self, please buy batteries for camera before final party.

Gasshuku means training camp, and we hold it every year, where we invite students from Keio University kendo team in Japan to come practice with us for a week. We hold daily practices and also entertain them by showing them around Boston and Cambridge and holding parties and so on. It's a lot of fun but hugely time-consuming. ^_^

Is Gasshuku a kendo tournament that's going on here? While I was walking back to my dorm just now, I saw a group of Japanese-speaking people wearing hakama and carrying long bags that I thought were a kendo team, but I wasn't quite sure.

Gasshuku means training camp. Specifically in this case, we hold a week-long event where we host students from the kendo team at Keio University in Japan and practice with them daily. There are also social events where we take them around Cambridge and Boston and throw parties, etc. This year, there are 23 Keio students visiting, so yes, the group you saw were probably them being escorted by their hosts. ^_^
