O procrastination!--begone from me

Hah, so much for my resolution to stay off LJ. What I've been doing instead of studying for my midterm:
1. I got Transfixion (Korean alternative rock band) after
angelyrique sent me a song off their new album, only to discover that the only song I really liked on the album was the one she had already shared with me. Then I decided to go on a downloading spree and got the Wonderland debut single by May (which has a nice cover of "Lydia" by F.I.R.), Humming Urban Stereo's second album (they really need to make up their mind whether they're going to be a Clazziquai-wannabe or an indie dance group), a new trance group Desired Effect (two thumbs up!) and the second disc of the Eastronika album that I've been trying to find for ages (compilation of various artists so some are excellent while others are blah).
2. Well, not so much lately, but these past two months, I've been reading manga whenever I couldn't get myself to study. A horrible habit. I think I've gone through a dozen oneshots, not to mention all the series that I've finally started. Some brief impressions (nothing particularly profound, just knee-jerk reactions):
Kimi wa Petto - I don't quite understand Sumire's dependence on Momo--well, I mean, I understand it but not emotionally--but otherwise, she's one of the most psychologically real characters in all the manga I've read. Actually, that makes reading the series somewhat uncomfortable at times, probably because I can't read it mindlessly. But don't mind my rambling, this series is definitely to be recommended! I must go reread Tin's fic sometime, now that I know who the characters involved are.
NANA - Why didn't anyone warn me how emotionally draining this series is? -_- The fragility of all the characters unnerves me, and as
worldserpent mentioned, the tone of the narration continually implying some sort of tragic ending only keeps me expecting the worst to happen. I do like the series, but it requires stamina, the mental equivalent of a full stomach. Paradise Kiss was easier in that respect, I think. It's also difficult for me to properly fangirl over NANA because I have such ambiguous feelings about all of the characters--a testament no doubt to Yazawa Ai's brilliant characterizations--and I feel too invested in the storyline to be able to talk about it with any sense of detachment.
1997 Nen 7 no Tsuki Shanghai - Kind of like a BL version of West Side Story set in Shanghai. The art is rough but once you get used to the style, it's very eloquent, evoking expression in a few careless strokes. I liked the sad, melancholy, desperate tone of the series, even though that's not usually what I like in BL. Tragedy without the self-pity.
20th Century Boys - Still in the middle of volume 18. (Question involving spoiler: Someone please explain to me why Otcho and Yoshitsune look so much older than Kenji when he reappears?) Also, this series is brilliant and insane (like all true genius is). It took me a while to get into it--Monster did a better job of immediately grabbing your attention--and I have to admit I have no idea where Urasawa is going with the plot but I have confidence that he knows what he's doing. I wonder if I should read Pluto too (I saw scans on IRC).
Shion no Ou - Mystery manga about shougi! Why isn't there a Hikaru no Go crossover yet? Perhaps the series sets too serious a tone?
Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou - Years after I read the first twelve volumes, I finally get around to reading volumes 13-17. Now I feel as if I ought to revise the Kare Kano fic I wrote over the summer since he is clearly much more dependent on Yukino than I had expected. Must find volumes 18-19 at bookstore soon. (Question involving spoiler: Does Arima want to become a musician like his father? That would be interesting.) I want to write more fic for this series now.
Sensei - Started rereading this series. It's as cute as I remembered. I like the calm, laidback tone--it is emotional but in a very gentle fashion. Perhaps it's the softer art that gives that impression. I still don't quite get why Itou likes Shimada though.
3. Working on A Study in Scarlet FST with
tryogeru, although very little progress made so far. I also finished putting together a short, sparse FST for Norwegian Wood, a very inadequate job. It's a bit monotonous, I think. I try to structure my FSTs to have some sort of development, whether it be musical or conceptual, but this one remains flat and steady throughout the entire mix. I should probably have searched for more songs instead of allowing approximations...might just post it here instead of on
fst if I'm still dissatisfied by next week.
(Also hastily constructed a DIASPORA fake OST. Absolutely no thought behind it whatsoever--just slapped together songs with appropriate titles, made sure to include a song for happy moments, sad moments, close-up face shots, panning landscape shots, and of course an opening and ending theme. But alas, it does not have any techno.)
I also organized my notes and looked at the next Systems Biology problem set. I did not however do my Korean peer editing homework which is due this Friday nor post to the discussion board about our current unit, which is on Korean economic development. I know nothing about economics by the way, which makes the vocabulary for this unit rather meaningless to me. >_> And while I've looked through my biochemistry lecture notes, I haven't in fact gone over any problems yet, which is a bit of a problem.
Still reading fic, but have yet to leave proper feedback. ;_; I did enjoy all the fics linked to in the Rec-Go-Round meme (both in my post and other people's posts) and intend to leave proper comments...once this exam is over with.
Yours &c.

Date: 2006-04-12 07:24 am (UTC)I'm not so sure why they do look older. Harder living? Just chance? Kenji was cryogenically stored?

Date: 2006-04-12 10:06 pm (UTC)Cryogenics! Now that's an idea. I suppose it could also be just chance since Friend doesn't look all that old either, but that raises the question of why Yoshitsune and Otcho are different...

Date: 2006-04-12 10:08 pm (UTC)Yes, I stopped at the end of the Kazuma/Tsubasa arc as well, but then I got curious as to what happened with Arima. Poor boy is more messed up than I expected, although I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. XD;;

Date: 2006-04-12 03:15 pm (UTC)Because the series is relatively unknown? I'm not too sure about the too serious a tone. To be honest, it's the first time I've heard of it. But then again, I haven't been reading much manga lately.

Date: 2006-04-13 02:21 am (UTC)Heh, as for Sarasate, I was just gonna ask you if you had any violin virtuoso pieces, but if they've attended one of his concerts, then it makes sense to have him in there, ne?
I really want at least one violin piece that is melancholic, for Holmes. Something slow, but I don't have a huge selection of violin stuff...
I'm looking for creepy Mormon songs. Country songs don't tend to be creepy, and most of the stuff I have is more modern, but I'm keeping a lookout for sure. I'm hoping to find a creepy Mormon chorus. Or just creepy religious chorus. Or something. Yeah.
Oh, and i still have a couple of dollars left in my itunes card, so if you find something really cool but undownloadable but it's on itunes, we can use it for that.
Hmm, just wondering...
