Reading, watching, writing

1. For some reason, whenever I think of Nietzsche, I get this Rasputin-like image of a gaunt, unkempt man with a fanatical gleam in his eye who is quite possibly frothing at the mouth. Probably due to his hyperbolic and faintly hysterical prose. Although on reconsideration, he's probably more the pale starving scholar sort with a consumptive sort of beauty but still with the same fanatical expression. Anyway, it's a disappointment to look him up on Wikipedia and realize that he actually looks like a robust and respectable bourgeois. (He'd probably be horribly insulted by that description.)
Flippancy aside, Nietzsche sounds so neurotic and overwrought that I can't take him seriously--although I certainly sympathize with the tone if not the philosophy since I too enjoy writing neurotic and overwrought streams-of-consciousness--but in fact many of the ideas that have influenced me stemmed from him, which is a disturbing thought. (I suppose Nietzsche may even purposefully exaggerate his prose in order to avoid the Cyclopean Socratic eye of objectivity, hahaha...okay, I shouldn't laugh, but he does sound a little ridiculous at points.) I actually enjoy listening to Prof. Gordon talk about Nietzsche more than reading Nietzsche himself because Prof. Gordon is dryly articulate and speaks incisively where Nietzsche is incoherent. -_-
2.
murinae mentioned the 2006 remake of Return of Condor Heroes, so I looked it up on Youtube and spent several hours watching the first four episodes last night. So pretty. The action scenes aren't very thrilling and the CG is a little cheesy, but the actual setting and actors are all gorgeous. According to D-Addicts, there are 40+ episodes. -_- It's a good thing I didn't look for the rest of the episodes on Youtube, otherwise I'll end up glued to the computer for the rest of the week.
3. I also read the first part of Jojo (yes, I am weak to peer pressure), and the series is addictive. I'm not even sure why, but it is. Various reactions over the course of reading part 1:
HAHAHAHA. It's destructive intereference!
Zeppeli fighting with wine glass in hand...awesome.
...He fights with his hair? "Danse macabre hair"?
Holding off on reading the rest of part 2 until this weekend because otherwise I won't get any schoolwork done. -_-
4. In other news, I updated my writing archive. Now you can read the edited version of Balance (no real substantial revisions except in the second part). I made the same revisions in the LJ form as well, but the web version is probably easier to read. I also put up An Exorcism, as well as several other recently written fics, but I still need to code three more to be completely up-to-date. (One of those three being my
blind_go fic. Aren't I lazy.)
Speaking of which, I still need to write the sequel to Balance...as soon as I figure out how to resolve the plot. Argh.
Some links of interest:
citynextdoor has opened its Big Insert Fruit Challenge, where you sign up to write an AU (or setting-based fic) taking place in your metropolis of choice. Go claim your city here. I signed up for Seoul, although I don't know if my two visits to the place qualify as being familiar with it. -_- I'm debating whether to write a modern!AU for Damo or go with some other K-drama series. Also, new
fan_extension courses at
doctairej (Serious Fandom Research (TM)) and
alt_fst (Alt.FST). Go join! (Probably all old news to most of you, but hey, additional links can't hurt.)
Yours &c.

Date: 2006-09-27 12:15 am (UTC)2. Tari, WTH, I've been UPLOADING RoCH. You're ON THE FILTER. -_____-;;; (The action scenes improve and isn't the scenery GORGEOUS?)
3. YAAAAAAAAY! I'll send Ka over so she can bother you for fanfic! ^_____^
4. Still haven't had time to read

Date: 2006-09-27 12:23 am (UTC)I actually have no idea how one would write fanfic for Jojo. (Hence, my awe and respect for Sabina has increased by another order of magnitude.) ^_^

Date: 2006-09-27 12:29 am (UTC)Well, I'm sending Ka to poke you anyway. :P (It's okay! I have faith in youuuuu~! ^___^)

Date: 2006-09-27 02:42 am (UTC)I was about to scrounge them up for you. *nods* It really does get better. And yes, that place exists in china and it is that beautiful. I've never been there but yeah, it really is pretty up there. The water really is that blue; it's not a special effect.
The action scenes do get better. And it is a HECK of a lot better than the oldest version ... thoug I still love 9t with the strange undying love of a thousand suns. XD

pst: Don't skip. There are lots and lots of itty bitty details and RotCH is rather sequential. But man, I love that story.

Date: 2006-09-27 03:22 am (UTC)Yes, it's probably good for me to wait for the torrents because it means my marathoning won't interrupt my homework time. XD;;

Date: 2006-09-27 03:33 am (UTC)Don't worry, it doesn't have to be like Sabina's! Most people's isn't! XD I mean, my fics are on the total other end of the spectrum from hers, but people find them entertaining, so that's all that matters, right? :D SO WRITE FIC OR DIE uh, I mean, please help us fill up our jojo fic archive with content. Even if it sucks. Well. I mean, we must all make efforts so things are not, in fact, sucky, but I am sure you... er...
I make like this awesome first impression, yes? XD;
Speaking of Jojo FSTs, we're maybe gonna make some more for this upcoming month, since it's villians month and Jojo characters are 75% villians! :D (There's always the core group of good guys, a few enemies who become allies, and a huge number of random 1-fight villians with various special powers who allow our heroes to use their limited powers in various creative ways. It's sort of like Sailor Moon. I guess. XD)

Date: 2006-09-27 04:27 am (UTC)Well, there's an archive (which I am still swapping around the colors on, so there's not really anything posted there yet XD;) and Sabina and I decided we're gonna eventually start a comm (when she's back from China) uhhh so there will be fan resources other than the current jojo comm eventually! (It's a decent comm, but more of the info sort, and too many fanboys for us to feel comfortable taking it over with our slashfics and fanart xD; I'd feel guilty doing such a thing.)
re: FSTs,

Date: 2006-09-27 08:19 am (UTC)Hey, I didn't know that you guys were thinking of a comm. Count me in if you need help writing the mission statement or maintaining.
(no subject)
Date: 2006-09-27 01:42 pm (UTC)anyhow yeah! you should be a mod too. (especially since sabina is so busy with the other things she runs like SSBB etc. SPEAKING OF WHICH she said those two really l33t artist girls who've liked jojo way longer than us submitted something for SSBB this month that was very good and, she said, was clearly warped by jojo and could be appreciated by such. Needless to say I look forward to reading it. XD) I think the three of us is enough, no need to make it like an IRC channel where everyone's opped, not that I really care per se but it's confusing for members if there are like 10 mods, and of course we could go on modding people forever. XD thank god for a fandom with no shriekies!! (Except me, mwaha?)
comms have mission statements?! ... I didn't know T_T I usually just write a list of rules, like "lj-cut spoilers" and "don't be annoying" and so on... >_>
(no subject)
Date: 2006-09-27 02:09 pm (UTC)Oh sue, I'll be a mod. :D It'll be nice to have a place to fangirl about Jojo. Next time I catch you on IRC, let's discuss the rules for the comm. (Er, by mission statement I meant rules...)
(no subject)
Date: 2006-09-27 11:40 am (UTC)I am down for a new comm (though I am rather fond of the name of the current one - OH GOD MY BIASES SHOW THEMSELVES).
Also, MORE JOJO FSTS, YESSSSS!
I have had Bananaphone stuck in my head for THREE DAYS, BTW, since I was listening to Puu's FST just the other day. ~___~

Date: 2006-09-27 05:06 pm (UTC)But anyway, a Zeppeli might be a Joestar's best friend, but Speedwagon definitely provides the best damn support that family ever gets. XDDD

Date: 2006-09-27 12:52 pm (UTC)Yay, I'll look forward to the comm and the FSTs. (Will there be one for Dio? XD)

Date: 2006-09-27 01:53 pm (UTC)The assassins team are 9 guys who are the villians for a fair chunk of Part 5, which is indeed about the mafia... basically, it's the adventures of Giorno Giovanna, the Italian Jojo (get it, GioGio?) who wants to become a "Gang Star" and clean up the mafia. So he joins Bruno Buccellati, who apparently collects gay fashion disasters for his
boy bandgang, and they battle for justice... sort of. Oh and nearly everyone in Part 5 is named after Italian food. XD (Some of the assassins include Prosciutto, Risotto, Pesci, Sorbet, Gelato, etc.)The serial killers... well... Okay, excluding Jonathan and Erina, you're gonna notice something about Jojo, which is that any het relationship you actually believe in is usually marked by one of the people being insane. Like, literally insane. So this FST is for Kira, the serial killer in part 4, and Annasui, the serial killer in part 6. (There are more serial killers and people who are just crazy in other ways, but we decided to focus on the murderers who are main characters with love interests.)

Date: 2006-09-27 04:30 pm (UTC)I mean, I still have that damn chicken noodle soup, soda on the side song stuck in my head! UGH. I don't even like that song. (Though I guess if anyone were making a "Get Well Soon" FST, that'd be the first on the playlist.)
...I don't suppose you can link the original FST? I'm a member of the comm now, so I can actually see posts but I'm dumb and can't seem to locate it in the memories.

Date: 2006-09-27 11:49 pm (UTC)Sorry I can't be more help. All I can think of right now is the Shirley Manson cover of "Can't Get You Out of My Head" but that's more "hiding in the bushes outside your bedroom window" than serial killer. D:

Date: 2006-09-27 08:22 am (UTC)Also, let me say that the series gets EVEN MORE WEIRD. You don't think it's possible, right now he's just in some zenith (or is it nadir?) of continual freak-ness.
(no subject)
Date: 2006-09-27 12:57 pm (UTC)I'm definitely getting this impression from reading various posts about the series, and all I can do is just boggle at how the man can come up with Aztec vampires and still top that with even more awesome weirdness. XD I did sneak a peek at the first chapter of part 2 and couldn't stop grinning at the Tammany Hall-esque New York setting. <3

Date: 2006-09-27 04:13 pm (UTC)you always think it can't get more bizarre, but it always does. such an aptly named series I never did see. XD;;

Date: 2006-09-27 02:14 pm (UTC)Glad to hear that you've started reading Part One and enjoyed it XD I recommended it to a friend, who after reading it...needed a cold compress.^^; The series is just completely and totally awesome, and like everyone else has told you, gets weirder by each progressing part.
XD; which makes one wonder what the man eats every night.
(no subject)
Date: 2006-09-27 03:24 pm (UTC)I was definitely laughing until my ribs hurt all throughout part 1. XD And now I'm really looking forward to the rest! ^_^
