Lowell House, on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Hikaru no Go fandom, I heart you all. ^_^ And although I, er, am not writing for this round of
blind_go, I'm jumping on the bandwagon and doing
flonnebonne's meme anyway:
1. Books/Authors that have influenced your writing (or you could just tell us about books/authors you love).
There are certain authors whom I admire to the point of consciously trying to emulate them, although I don't know if my writing actually resembles theirs: G.K. Chesterton, Ursula K. Le Guin, Kazuo Ishiguro. (What a pretentious list. But it's true, especially with Chesterton.) There are also certain writers whose influence I detect in my writing, either on my style or on my characterization or even general setting/worldbuilding: L.M. Montgomery, Robin McKinley, Diana Wynne Jones. (I would like to say that J.R.R. Tolkien influenced me, but unfortunately I can never do what Tolkien does, though I kept trying for years in high school.) I also suspect that the way I structure my "vignettes" is a very bad imitation of Chekhov and Ibsen, whose plays I spent an inordinate amount of time reading in high school.
2. Fanfics/Fanficcers that have influenced your writing (ditto).
Well, uh, obviously
team7 and
aishuu. I freely admit that I copy and borrow from both of them quite shamelessly and have been doing so since I started writing fanfiction on a quasi-regular basis. ^_^ If we're specifically talking about Hikaru no Go fandom,
murinae and
issen4 have had the most crucial impact on the way I think about the series and hence the sort of fanfiction I write for it.
sub_divided influences me a lot as well, though I suspect that she has no idea that she does. ^_^ Also, it was
orangensaft and
memlu who really showed me what could be done with a drabble. There are plenty of other writers I admire but can never actually emulate: top on this list is
petronia, although it includes many others on the friends list. (Which is odd because it's not that Sabina writes in a strikingly unusual way. Rather, I can't discern the "method" or "process" behind her writing from the work alone.)
3. Favourite HnG character(s).
Touya Akira, hands down. I also really like Sai, which I think is obvious from the fanfiction I've written. I like writing from Hikaru's perspective most though, more than Sai or Akira, actually. I also love the go club characters and the Korean baduk team (which is why I really hope
room101 finishes her An Taeseon epic someday). ^_^
4. Your fics. Pimp a fic (or two, or three) to facilitate guessing. Doesn't have to be HnG.
Well, since I won't be writing for this round, I don't need to link to fics, do I? ^_^ (But for future reference, I'm very proud of Balance precisely because I normally can't write long fics with plots.)
5. Juicy gossip about yourself.
Er. The first thing that popped into my head was, "I'm applying to grad school." Which is not particularly juicy or even gossip. Um, let's see...I'm obsessed with kendo? With which I've always had a bizarre masochistic relationship, since it causes all sorts of headaches both in and out of practice, but now that I no longer have any responsibilities, I've just been sailing on the endorphin high from each week's keiko. Actually, I went to practice today right after section because it occurred to me that I really didn't want to do any of my reading, and kendo would be a great way of avoiding it. I have a similar attitude towards lab: I keep volunteering to stay late to finish off experiments because I prefer spending long hours in lab puttering around with pipettors than doing schoolwork. Which is why I think I'll actually be quite happy in grad school, despite my common sense telling me otherwise.
Speaking of which, I still don't want to do any of this reading. Hm. I think I'll go to sleep instead. >_>
Today, I found in my mailbox a postcard from
ladydaera, an Advent card from the Catholic Student Association, and a holiday card from the Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies (to whose mailing list I was subscribed after I kept pestering them politely for grant money two years ago). Oh, the joy they brought to my poor abandoned mailbox, which had been drearily empty for weeks! I was delighted over the postcard, of course, but pathetically enough, I even found myself feeling touched by the two generic greeting cards, which hardly bore any personalized message other than, well, my name on the envelope.
Still, there's something so much more tangible about paper mail, isn't there? On that note, I'll be sending out holiday cards this weekend. ^_^
Yours &c.

Date: 2006-12-14 06:41 am (UTC)And um, thanks for the critique when I basically pressured you into it -_-. During finals season! I feel kind of bad but I needed to check with someone to make sure it wasn't secretly too awful to salvage. Livejournal silences are unnerving since sometimes they really do mean that no one is impolite enough to tell you how bad your writing is.
