Another meme

Words cannot describe how utterly unmotivated I am about schoolwork at the moment. -_- Grad school apps are all submitted, and I won't have to think about this whole process again until interview season arrives.
Anyway, I'm bored! Stealing this meme from
schwimmerin, but with a twist.
Ask me one question about (one or) each of the following:
1. Friends
2. Fashion
3. Music
4. Fandom
5. Love (or alternatively, sex)
6. LiveJournal
Originally, no. 2 was "sex" with "clothing" as an alternative, no. 4 was "drugs", and no. 5 was just "love". But I figured my opinions on fandom would be a more interesting topic than my opinions on drugs--which go along the lines of, "Altering my brain chemistry?! Are you crazy? Heresy!"--and my anal-retentive mind demands that I group related items together (i.e. "love" and "sex" rather than "sex" and "clothing").
Yours &c.
Post-script: Aw, the kendo freshmen are so cute, organizing their own weight-training program! Which puts me to shame because hahaha, guess who hasn't been doing pushups? >_>

Date: 2006-12-14 05:05 am (UTC)- Korean songs for which I know the lyrics (so I can sing along)
- In the same vein, Broadway OSTs of favorite musicals
- World folk music of all sorts
- Alternative
- More upbeat forms of electronica (stuff bordering on dance)
Music I listen to when I'm lounging around doing nothing at home:
- Turandot
- Piano concertos and sonatas, from Beethoveen to Rachmaninov (mostly early to late Romantics)
- Any other opera album we own
- Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel

4&5 Does it happen that you project your own love life to your fanfiction? And your feelings or habbits to your characters?
(no subject)
Date: 2006-12-14 02:41 pm (UTC)4/5. Hahaha, what love life? I think I do a hefty amount of self-projection but not on a particularly conscious level; it's just that I have no other reference for how to describe the emotion that the character is feeling at the moment. Still, there's a considerable amount of transmutation involved. For example, my writing about a fictional character in love is usually based on the intensity of my emotion for things that I'm passionate about (such as biology) rather than on the direct experience of being in love myself.
I've also been told by my friends that my characters sound like me, but that is something I've tried to avoid. Other than that, I don't know if I've ever attributed actual habits of mine to my characters, but I've certainly borrowed habits from other people I observe in real life.

And maybe now I'll stop to suspect any author in having love affair or broken heart.
Yeah, I think it was really narrow view on things.

Date: 2006-12-14 11:50 pm (UTC)1. Do you still keep in touch with friends from high school?
2. Would you ever switch to contact lenses or get laser surgery? Under what circumstances?
3. Is listening to music a distinct activity, or do you listen to music while doing other things?
4. When you write fanfic are you more likely to start with the series and look for a story, or to start with the story and look for a series? Um, I hope that makes sense.
5. First kiss XD.
6. Why do you have a paid account?

Date: 2006-12-15 02:58 am (UTC)2. I wear contact lenses for kendo, although the ones I have don't correct for my astigmatism so I still wear glasses everywhere else. If I ever decide to shell out money for more expensive contacts, then I'll probably make the permanent switch. I'm kind of squeamish about the idea of laser surgery though because the idea of your cornea never quite healing freaks me out. >_>
3. Usually I use music as a background for other things. The only real exception would be opera, since I need to concentrate on it to properly appreciate it. (Although I'm still reading the libretto at the same time, so I guess it's not entirely distinct.)
4. Actually, it makes perfect sense. Most of the time, I start with the series and look for a story that suits it. But when I'm trying to write for a theme or a prompt, I tend to think up a vague setup to suit the theme first and hunt for a series that matches later..
5. ...I haven't had one yet. _-_ To be honest, I've been feeling rather disgruntled that I'm about to graduate from college without having been kissed once. This is why I usually try to avoid writing about kisses in fanfiction...no experience.
6. Mostly for the customized layouts. Although I really like the ability to make polls and use Scrapbook as well.

3. Any other bands/groups you'd like to see in concert?
4. I'm not in any of your fandoms, really, so I'll leave this blank ;)
5. Whatever happened to Boy? (You can answer this personally if you don't want to on your LJ, haha.)
6. Why the background you currently have? (I like it!)
For some reason I have something against complete sentences?

Date: 2006-12-15 03:52 am (UTC)2. I would like to wear a qipao one day. I would also like to own a hanbok, but I know from personal experience that they're a little uncomfortable. >_> But it would be nice to have one for holidays.
3. ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI. Oh my gosh. They would be so awesome, especially if they brought all their percussion instruments on stage. *_*
5. Communications dribbled to a halt in late spring as my courses proceeded to crush my soul, were abruptly severed during the summer since neither of us went on MSN anymore, and were revived for a brief conversation at the beginning of the semester when I proceeded to find that indeed any nonplatonic feelings had pretty much dried up. Actually, I was shocked that the infatuation lasted so long to begin with, but I suppose that was my first real crush (as opposed to idly liking someone and forgetting all about them once the next big exam/project/life-changing book hits). But you know, a large part of the infatuation was based on the fact that Boy took an interest in me, and not keeping in touch essentially means lack of interest. ::shrugs:: It was a relief to move on actually; fixating on impossible things is generally a miserable experience. ^_^

Date: 2006-12-16 09:36 pm (UTC)2. Favorite T-shirt and why?
4. What was your first fandom and did you ever write bad Mary Sues for it? *g*
6. How do you pronounce your LJ username? ^^;;
(no subject)
Date: 2006-12-16 11:16 pm (UTC)2. Hm, do I have a favorite T-shirt? I guess it would be my lab T-shirt which has a cartoon of a baby Arabidopsis plant on the front and the Bauer Center logo on the back. ^_^
4. My first fandom was Lord of the Rings but I wrote no fanfiction for it. I did attempt making up my own imitation fantasy world but I was more obsessed with inventing the geography and climate of all things than writing actual stories. This one story idea I did write took place in the desert and did have a Mary Sue character. (She was outcast and misunderstood by her tribe for her strange shamanic powers! Oh the emo!) But the story setup was influenced more by Robin McKinley (and this essay I'd read in class on Masai society) than Tolkien himself.
The first fandom I wrote fanfiction for was Gundam Wing, and although I didn't make up a Mary Sue, I basically used Heero as a self-insert and made him into a teenage emo as well. I feel awfully embarrassed whenever I read it.
6. Ostensibly it's based on random Quenya roots I looked up in Tolkien's appendices, but I just say "tah-ree gway-meer". XD

Date: 2006-12-17 05:22 pm (UTC)1. any friend drama?
2. you are being transported back in time. sorry, you cannot op out of this!
3. if you could pick an instrument to play really well, what woudl it be?
4. do you ever think about how weird the whole concept and activity of "fandom" is, as it exists today and on the internet? thoughts? (fan-people: i do not mean to offend!)
5. any other crushes in college? even casual ones?
(no subject)
Date: 2006-12-17 07:04 pm (UTC)2. Er...I guess you're asking what era would I choose given the fashion for women at the time? Well, if historical dramas are any guide (which they probably aren't), I would choose the Three Kingdoms period in Korea (sample), since the costumes look the most comfortable.
3. Definitely not the piano. I took lessons for seven years and hated every moment of it. I didn't mind violin or flute, but I can honestly say that I'd never play either of those really well. I don't think I'm cut out to be an instrumentalist (despite preferring instrumental to vocal music), but if I had to choose, I would say some obscure folk instrument with a cool but strange timbre, like the didgeridoo or the gamelan.
4. Oh yes, fandom is really, really weird. Especially if you read the stuff that goes on at Fandom Wank or the accounts of previous drama on Bad Penny. Some people spend way too much time on the Internet. I like to think that I stick to mostly sane fandoms or at least the mostly sane corners of fandom though. And well, writing fanfiction is a weird fan activity that most of us probably take too seriously, but I think it can't hurt to engage in a creative activity, and goodness knows that I have no ambition to try to tackle original fiction in any serious fashion. ^_^ Some of the friends I've made in fandom I've known for years now, and there's something to be said for being able to find people who share your interests.
But I must admit, my real-life friends were the ones who dragged me into fandom in the first place, and if they hadn't, I probably never would have gone beyond participating in the occasional trivia game on a Tolkien message board.
5. Haha, you do go for the tough questions, don't you? Well, freshman year, I sort of had a crush on someone in my section, whose name I can't remember now. It was more of a case of me wanting to have a crush than anything else though. Sophomore year, zilch because I was too busy trying to salvage my GPA. Junior year was spent intensely crushing on aforementioned person. As for now, I may or may not be in the middle of a casual crush, but it hasn't been long enough to tell for sure whether it's just a side effect of my unsettled state of mind or not. -_-
