School scheduling, Weber and anime
Sep. 3rd, 2002 05:44 pmAd Mundo Exteriore,
First day of school today, or rather orientation for the seniors. Classes start on Thursday. My schedule is fine except for three things: 1) I can't take International Relations or Readings in Philosophy, 2) I have to take AP French, and I wasn't planning to before, and 3) I have a scheduling conflict between my gym class and my off-campus math class at Columbia. Now, the first thing I've been resigned to all summer, but resentment has flared up again, because I have fifth period free five days a week and I could have taken a class then, instead of first period! But the incompetent programmer didn't tell me. Argh.
Mother just told me that she's buying me a book by Max Weber, The Ethics of Protestantism and Capitalism. Eh? Oh, actually it's The Protestant Ethic and "Spirit" of Capitalism. Weird. Apparently she feels I ought to read it, since it is a philosophical classic. I can't handle Camus, who is a writer with pseudo-philosophical pretensions, and she wants me to read Weber?! Okay...
Anyway, back to programmers and schedules. Now, I don't mind AP French, the subject, but the teacher is apparently terribly boring, and I would much prefer a social studies elective instead, despite all the additional work, thank you very much. I have to go through twelfth grade without a single social studies class? Sure, it's a lot of work (the social studies department is notorious for having all the hard teachers), but it is one of my favorite subject areas outside of math, science and English. Okay, fine, so I like all academic subjects, but still!
I'm further miffed because I wanted nontraditional gym classes like tai chi and karate, but the programmer forced me to switch to physically intensive classes like raquetball and rock climbing. AGH! And now there's still a conflict?! Injustice! (I've been watching too much GW lately.) Even more aggravating: the only gym classes that I can take are those that meet twice a week during fifth period. Now, that's usually something like folk/square/ballroom dancing, which I took last year and cannot take again. So there may not even be a gym class for me...oh wait, I think there's something like aerobics. Okay, I feel slightly better. What is it with gym class and me? I had to stand in line for several hours after last year's orientation, just so that I could enter the missing gym class into my schedule. Now I have to stand for hours again to fix the gym class once again.
What would make my life easier: just get rid of the physical education requirement altogether.
On a brighter note, Ender's Jeesh is at its own domain name. Yes! I changed the layout for the contents and ansible pages a little, so go check it out, if you haven't already. (1024x768 only, sorry Tryo-chan.)
I've finally watched .hack//SIGN and it's actually met my every expectation. It's a wonderful anime: beautiful animation, amazing soundtrack, and great storyline. I want the OST actually from someone for Christmas. (That's a hint, to Lyd-chan and Tryo-chan. ^_^ Yes I know I'm several months early.) Many of the tracks are Celtic, which makes me very, very pleased. (I'm the Anuna fan, remember?) It's just a fantastic anime, period, and I really want to watch the rest of it soon.
Also spent the last two days watching the first thirty-five episodes of Kodomo no Omocha, laughing my head off all the way. It's extremely funny and charming, but it's probably not to Tryogeru's tastes. The main pairing is het, the characters are sixth graders, and the whole storyline is more amusing than violent or twisted. ^_~ It's very amusing though (reminds me a little of Karekano), so I went to Book-Off and bought the first three manga. There are ten total, plus an extra volume, but onii-chan can't find them anywhere. We were thinking about trying to order through Asahiya, but we don't know how. Tryo-chan? Help?
