Meditation on Lackey
Nov. 20th, 2002 10:04 pmAd Mundo Exteriore,
I'm terribly tired. And I want to watch the extended DVD, but I can't because no one in the house knows that I've bought it, and I want to keep it that way. I've been reading To Take a Thief by Mercedes Lacky, and boy, is it awful. Oniichan and I used to love her in eighth grade, but I think we had bad taste back then. Although her limited writing ability has dribbled away in the past who-knows-how-many years.
Don't get me wrong. I have all the affection in the world for Vanyel, 'Lendel, Firesong, Karal and all the other characters. But the truth is, the attraction of these books lay mostly in their unrealistic perfection. The joy was in imagining yourself in the place of the characters. As oniichan used to say, "I want to have a Companion and a Firecat, possess all the Gifts, and be a Healing Adept as well!" ::shakes head:: Never mind how impossible that was, even in Misty Lackey's impossible world.
On the other hand, something like The Neverending Story, which is technically a children's book, still remains as wonderful as when I first read it. ::sighs:: I think reading bad fanfiction has sensitized me somehow to bad writing in published work.
