Spending

Ad Mundo Exteriore,

I am so doomed.

There is a SF/F bookstore around here called Pandemonium Books. It has all of the Sandman comics in glossy, mint condition. It has British-edition Discworld hardcovers with Paul Kirby covers. (As well as Terry Pratchett's earlier works that no one ever knows, like Strata.) It has every single volume of The History of Middle-Earth.

I bought Ted Chiang's first short story anthology. It cost me about $15.

Now, yesterday I already spent around $16 to buy an extremely cheap used hardcover copy of Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain, which my mother claims encompasses all of the central issues in Western philosophy in its 500 or so pages. I also bought Five Little Peppers Midway. Five Little Peppers and How They Grew is a popular children's book that many of you may have read, but what you probably don't know is that there are eleven sequels to it, of which Midway is one. I couldn't possibly leave that sitting on the shelf, could I? The only copies in the NYPL system are hidden somewhere in the Central Library and are viewable by request only.

Then I went to Tokyo Kid, which is the local anime shop just next to Pandemonium Books. What an understatement that is. I have never seen such a comprehensive merchandise store. It has keychains, cell phone ornaments, trading cards, plushies, figurines, artbooks(!), soundtracks, posters for Hikaru no Go, Shaman King, Naruto, Prince of Tennis, D.N. Angel, Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou...::weeps:: I couldn't believe my eyes. There was this cute keychain with little charms featuring each of the St. Rudolph team members (and for the Hyotei team as well, I think). There was a Hikaru no Go beginner go set with stones that had the character faces engraved on them. Heck, there was a Sai cell phone ornament! An Iruka plushie! Shaman King bookmarks! (At least I think they were bookmarks. They also might have been very big clips.) Yukiru Sugisaki's latest artbook! I bought myself a Daisuke poster to put on the wall (only $3) but oh my goodness, that shop is such a temptation.

I'm going to be dirt poor by the end of this year if I go near that place again. Both my vices in one location!

So yes, if you want any anime-related merchandise, provided that the series is relatively popular, I can probably buy it for you. And for those friends who remember that my birthday is coming up soon (September 21) and want to do more than give me a "Happy Birthday" message on their LJ, you can send me money and I'll cheerfully figure out a way to spend it.

(By the way, my dear Hallway people, while I don't actually expect any of you to get me presents, except maybe [livejournal.com profile] tryogeru, I do expect some sort of birthday greeting in one form or another. You don't need to use a big font or anything. A simple "Happy Birthday, Tari" will suffice. Especially since no one here is going to know when my birthday is, not even L.P. unless her memory for that kind of thing has improved in the last year.)

Anyway, I've spent about $50 in the past two days (I also bought the Freshman Register >_<), and I'm going to try religiously to not spend any more this month if I can. I'm pretty well stocked up in personal hygiene products and other necessities, so hopefully it won't prove to be a problem.

...Tari
