Lowell House on the Feast of St. Gaucherius
My thesis is complete! And handed in! And 70 pages long, including title page, figures, references and appendices! Yes, I had two appendices to my thesis, as ridiculous as that sounds. Also, although I am no longer capable of determining whether anything I wrote sounded at all intelligent or interesting, I am proud of my figures, which I am immodest enough to claim look more professional than most papers.
I dedicate my thesis to...
Microsoft Excel, since I used it not only to generate three-quarters of my figures, but also for data analysis, macro programming and experiment planning (my lab notebook is empty because I kept all my records on Excel);
Adobe Illustrator, which is the only vector-based graphics program that fully panders to my neuroses about centering and alignment and neat borders;
my roommates, for putting up with my bad moods and sulky fits throughout the entire thesis-writing process;
Gmail, which allowed me to quickly transfer files as well as communicate with my P.I. and post-doc while they were away on the West coast during the last week before my thesis was due;
blind_go, for providing me with at least one venue of procrastination;
...and last but not least, the Fairchild basement vending machine for providing me with food at 3 in the morning when I was starving from having only eaten a single meal all day.
Ugh, I can't believe I'm done! This process has been awful from start to finish. I was still editing all this morning because my P.I.'s flight back from Seattle yesterday was delayed and she didn't return to Boston until past midnight. I suspect I wouldn't have been pushed to the last minute if I had actually, you know, been on top of things and started writing during February like I was supposed to (please note that I haven't done any experimental work for the past two months), but of course, it doesn't matter in the least now.
I'm going to go take a nap. Ugh, I think I'm actually a little tipsy from the (single!) glass of champagne I had at the reception, bearing witness yet again to my complete lack of alcohol tolerance. ::goes to collapse on the bed::
