Haste Street on the Feast of St. Valentine

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone! (Well, if you enjoy the holiday, that is.) For your amusement, here's the post I made a few years back on all the Valentine's Day spinoffs that are held on the fourteenth of each month in Korea.

The special fanart round for [livejournal.com profile] blind_go is up (in record time, may I add)! For those of you not watching the community, here's the fanart directory and the FST directory.

I thought as a Valentine's Day present, I'll finish up the alphabet drabble requests from two years ago (shush, I'm slow). Er...some of these are abominably short, and I think many of the requesters have dropped out of fandom, but never let it be said that I don't honor my obligations. (Even if it takes me two years to do so.)

Late
Written for [livejournal.com profile] harumi on the word "exasperation"

It was long past sunset when he came home, tiptoeing around the door with a guilty expression, ready to offer up a half-dozen excuses for his tardiness. "Sophie? I can explain--"

But the house was dark, other than the occasional spark sent up by a snoring Calcifer, and he heard no tapping toe from the corner, no sweeping broom, no familiar voice asking him testily, "Well?"

He finally found her slumped over the table in the kitchen, next to a cold dinner set out in covered dishes. He shook her awake gently. "Sophie? I'm home."

She looked up blearily and gave him a glare. "Sometimes I thoroughly despise you, Howl."

"By which you mean, you'll always love and adore me?"

She sniffed and motioned towards the food. "By which I mean, eat your dinner. You must be starving."

He caught her hand and kissed it. She looked away to hide her smile.

Separation
Written for [livejournal.com profile] ashirabe on the word "habeas corpus"

She disappeared in the winter, traveling with her brothers to hunt further and deeper in the mountains, her slim white figure disappearing into the snow. He would watch her leave, until he could no longer even imagine her perched on wolfback amidst the trees.

At such times, he would embrace her before she left, hoping somehow to pull her back with him behind city walls, which kept out the lashing cold and winter storms. But his arms could never hold her; before he knew it, she had already slipped away.

An All Too Temporary Reprieve
Written for [livejournal.com profile] faeryetale on the word "ice cream"

"Anna's been looking everywhere for you, Yoh."

"Shh, don't tell her I'm here!" He grinned and held up two melting cones. "Want one?"

Manta nodded eagerly. "Can I have the strawberry?"

They sat on the warm grass. The ice cream ran down their hands, leaving their fingers sticky and sweet.

"So this is where you've been hiding," said a voice behind them, causing them both to jump. Yoh looked up to see Anna's face looming over them with a frown.

She held out her hand. He handed over his half-eaten cone sadly, as she pointed towards the training ground. She bit into it with a loud crunch.

Fundraising
Written for [livejournal.com profile] lucathia_rykatu on the word "money"

"One thousand yen, for a batch of Anezaki's chocolates!" Hiruma announced. Immediately, there was a mad dash for the clubhouse.

"Me! I want chocolate from Senpai!"

"Mamori-chan! I'll pay two thousand for your chocolate!"

"I can't believe you're selling them," Mamori said. "Those were for the team, not for the entire school."

"Never pass up a fundraising opportunity." Hiruma smirked and changed the sign to read "¥2000".

Self-esteem
Written for [livejournal.com profile] memlu on the word "quaint"

"That Sophie Hatter! What a drab little mouse she is."

"She never says a word, does she? It's such a shame, since her sisters are so lively."

"She has a pretty face but her clothes! Did you see the dress she wore the other day? Such a quaint pattern!"

Sophie gritted her teeth and poked her needle rather savagely into the ribbon she was stitching onto a bonnet. "Never you mind what people say," she told the hat, "you'll outlast any trend or fashion."

END

Memory
Written for [livejournal.com profile] team7 on the word "water"

Years later, she still dreamed of water, blue and calm, like a cloudless summer sky, reflecting the bright sun in the ripples around her legs. She waded into the river until she had to stand on tiptoe to see above the surface before pinching her nose and plunging in. Her loose hair floated about her face, and she would impatiently shake her head from side to side, as she held her breath and waited, her heart beating faster and faster in her chest.

She was faint and dizzy by the time she finally glimpsed him, a white serpentine flicker out of the corner of her eye with a blue-green mane, before she had to claw back to the surface for air. Gasping, spluttering, drenched from head to toe, she looked about wildly, plunged back underwater, called out his name--the name she always forgot as soon as she woke up--

She remembered nothing, only the taste of river water in her mouth.

Uh yes, still feeling a little rusty when it comes to writing over here. >_>

Yours &c.

Let's go for jjajangmyeon on Black Day!

I didn't like jjajangmyeon when I was younger, because of the onions, but I always thought it smelled really good.

Kiss Day sounds terribly kinky or rage-inducing.

I like Wine Day, although I'll stick with wine despite being a singleton.

Yes, let's! I wanted to organize a Black Day outing last year, but we got distracted by reading period. -_- Is there a good 짜장면집 in SF? There's a decent one in Oakland.

Kiss Day is the oddest idea ever. I can't imagine how someone thought they could make money off it (most of the spinoffs are commercial inventions to drive advertising).

I have no idea, I haven't had Korean food here aside from one place that's all the way out by Japantown and has crap service. :-/ How do you get to Oakland w/o a car? Is there a bus down Telegraph?

Yes, there's a bus that goes down Telegraph although it comes at 30-minute intervals, which never ceases to shock and horrify me. -_-;; We could also always attempt to make it instead; there are 짜장면 kits at the Korean supermarket.

I've tried the bibimnaengmyeon kits before and they taste okay. They helped me get through winter in sophomore year, because the bright bursts of flavor were a nice reminder of hot weather and summer during the grey, snowy months. Jjajangmyeon should be pretty easy to make from scratch, too.

I think I vaguely remember leaving that prompt. XD Wow, going back to finish drabbles for prompts from two years ago...very persistent of you. Hm, I think I have some to do from pretty far back too actually.

I can entirely imagine that Eyeshield situation. :3

I had it on my writing to-do list at the top of my journal all this while, so it was nagging at me. I think I still have another set of drabble requests left to finish, actually. ^_^

Hee, glad it worked! Thought it would be appropriate for Valentine's Day. XD

Thank you!!! XD That was such a perfect little drabble. Though I'd forgotten about it until I read your post. Haha.

I would love to join you and celebrate Black Day too, since I normally did when I was in the US, but now I can't. *is sad*

I'm glad you liked it! Sorry again that it took me two years to get around to writing it...but better late than never? ^_^;;

Well, we shall celebrate together in spirit? XD And if you're ever in Cali around March 14, let's go eat noodles. ^_^

These are all great, but this

Sophie gritted her teeth and poked her needle rather savagely into the ribbon she was stitching onto a bonnet. "Never you mind what people say," she told the hat, "you'll outlast any trend or fashion."

Is my very favouritest line. Aww, SOPHIE.

Hey, the moderation thing with Bibliophages is my stupid doing. I forgot that Subdee posted things /before/ the opening of discussions, and I thought it was mighty inconvenient of me to stop her from posting. >_<;;;;; (1) I'll post an apology on the comm if that would be good. (2) I can't undo this change, you may have to?

Again, so sorry for the mess. :((((
