Had fun for an hour at Mr. Hankin's retirement party/lunch, especially when Dean and Co. started discussing how "scheming and power-hungry [Tari's real life name] is." We were discussing the appropriateness of the Ender's Game names, and when they made Sarah into Petra (sorry, kaydee, I had no control over this) and Dean into Bean, I had such a fun time telling them that Petra and Bean had children in the latest book. (Apologies for the spoiler. But really, it's on all the reviews. I knew they had children before I read the book too.)
Then I had to leave early to attend a classmate's Julliard recital, to which we got invited after my mother mentioned that we've never been in Julliard before. She played beautifully, though she struggled a little with Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy according to my mother. ::shrugs:: Honestly couldn't tell the difference except for a little roughness in tone. Anyway, I was then thoroughly snubbed by the HPTF orchestra clique, until the mother reorganized people deftly so that one of the alums who graduated last year was sitting at our table. I got to hear a whole spiel on the college experience, which was actually quite interesting. He was in HUNS last year and now plans to go into political science. Very cool. Still, I wish I hadn't stayed for the reception. Actually, I think I should have stayed at the math team luncheon. The chicken was good, and it was sort of amusing to hear Nathan and Harry coming up with "math fantasy teams."
We rented The Count of Monte Cristo, which was quite a disappointment, except for the prison parts. What happened to my Comte de Monte Cristo, with his aristocratic-looking pale skin, white after fourteen years of darkness in the Chateau d'If? What happened to his subtlety, the elegance of introducing poison to Mme de Villefort, of digging up the Comte de Morcerf's dark past, of bankrupting Danglars? Where was his kinder side, to Maximilien and the rest of the Morrel family? Where was Haydee?! And what was with Mercedes' constant "Hear me croon constantly to sound sexy and romantic, though I really end up sounding like an idiot"? She didn't seem like a Catalan at all. And Count Mondego? Excuse me? Fernand being Edmond's best friend? What?! Abbe Faria was the only worthwhile character. (Excuse me for the lack of accents. I'm tired of looking up ALT codes in Character Map.)
But I thoroughly enjoyed ripping up that movie. And boy, was there so much potential for slash in that movie. Despite, or perhaps even because of, the dumb and stupid dialogue. Oh, Dumas pere, you must be rolling in your grave even as we...er...type.
