Just as a public service announcement, yes, I know there was a spam email sent out to my entire Gmail contacts list. (As several of my other email addresses are on this contact list, I got the email myself about three different times.)

No, it isn't a virus. I use a Mac OS X at home and Linux computers at work; it's very unlikely that a virus would have attacked any of my computers. Also, my contacts list is on Gmail's web servers, so again, unlikely that it would have accessed my account through my computer. Don't worry, you didn't catch a virus from me.

What I think happened is that my email account got hacked, probably by some sort of spam email bot since this exact same situation has happened to other people.

If you're still worried and you have a Gmail account, I would consider changing your account password (which I did promptly for all my email accounts). -_-

Odd thing is, as far as I know, I didn't get the spam.

Neither did I - maybe it was someone on your contact list who got hacked, and your address was used as the spoof return?

No, I saw it in my Sent Mail folder, much to my mortification. Your email was definitely on the list of recipients, but perhaps Gmail did a better job of spam filtering for you than it did for me--you're not the only one who didn't see the email at all. I admit, my password was too easy, and I'd been accessing my email account on unprotected wireless networks, so I'm pretty sure I was just asking to be hacked.

I didn't get the initial spam email either.
