You are Melancholy. Melancholics are often gifted, even prone to genius. You are deep and thoughtful, but this can lead to your being too introspective, to the point of moodiness and depression when you find flaws within your self. You strive for perfection in all things, most especially your self and your immediate world. You are sensitive to the needs of others, and loyal to your friends, but can be hard to please. Melancholics do well in the Arts, science, and math.

Oh yeah, I meant to tell you about Sunday. See, our church holds an annual outdoor mass at Alley Pond every summer but this year the rain kept us in the basement instead. I'm not too sure about the details but for some reason they hired an entertainment emcee person to come up with ideas for the games we hold afterward. The idea turned out to be holding a Miss Greenpoint beauty pageant where the entrants would be guys in drag. ^_^ It was hilarious! The women grew very excited over planning the dress and makeup, especially our district where my mother coordinated operations by phone for a week before the event. (See, it's my father's turn to be district head? chief? representative? leader? this year, and naturally the one doing all the work is Mother.) Anyway, they put a whole lot of effort into it, getting fake nails from the nail salon, a strapless dress from a fashion designer who's in our district, a wig and other accessories from a woman who wins the prize for being the most excited about the drag contest. Much more planning than the other districts who basically resorted to hanbok. It helped that the man who volunteered was young and thin, with a pretty sort of face. (He had a lot of armpit hair, however, which added to the humourous effect.) So...yes, our district won first place.
By the way, don't think it's unusual for a Catholic church to hold a drag queen pageant. No one was really taking it seriously, and most of it was for comic effect. We're also Koreans, and this kind of thing actually happens pretty often on Korean comedy shows. It didn't seem strange at all until I thought about it for a while. Besides, half the men were fifty or older.
The parish council president came out in hanbok at the end, with one rhinestone clip earring and a scarf over his head. He said, in paraphrase, "A year ago, I too was a beautiful young girl, but after all this hard work, I've turned into an old man." He pulled off the scarf to reveal all his white hair and started dancing grandmother style across the stage. That image is going to come back and haunt me when I'm in the dentist's chair. (Yes, he's my dentist. Which is why I was kind of traumatized.)
Regarding Harry Potter, I was looking forward to the book before, but all the obsession on my friends list is beginning to scare me. I mean, I want to read the book, yes, but it's not even at the top of my list right now! Sure, next time I go to Barnes and Noble, I'll take a look and sit for a couple of hours but...sheesh. Write about other things occasionally!
Mother bought me a copy of The Tale of Genji, the Royall Tyler translation. It's the same edition as the nice new one in the school library. I don't know whether I'll be able to finish it during the summer, but hopefully there won't be too much of a culture clash. By the way, I may be admitting my stupidity, but I never knew that Genji was a Minamoto. (Apparently, Genji means something along the lines of "bearer of the Minamoto name".) Did the historical Minamoto clan of the Genpei wars take its name from the character or did Murasaki Shikibu borrow the name of an existing commoner clan? Or was the Genji of the novel a real person who was the ancestor of the Minamoto? I did know, by the way, that the Minamoto were often called Genji but I didn't know it was the same name, if you know what I mean. Transliteration gives me a headache sometime. If I really wanted to do this properly, I'd read the novel in Korean since translation would be much more accurate. But then, I'm just in it for Genji's numerous love affairs and the occasional mention of go.

Post-script: Have I mentioned that I'm starting flute lessons again, in my "old age"? I'm supposed to be preparing L'Arlesienne for this Friday, and I keep missing the high third-octave G. Argh.
