Ad Mundo Exteriore,
Today was the day I promised to visit
tryogeru (and drop by on other Wellesley people). Today was also the Head of the Charles Regatta.
(On a tangent: What does "regatta" mean anyway? And for those not in the know, the Head of the Charles is supposed to be this huge international rowing competition that takes place all weekend. Security around the Yard is unusually tight for this reason.)
Now, boats have nothing to do with me. So I went to kendo practice and then ran to the stop where the Wellesley "senate bus" was supposed to come around 3:40. At first I thought I missed it, but apparently I didn't, because another bus came within ten minutes of the one I thought I'd missed, and I managed to get on. (It was really crowded, and I had to stand during the entire time it took to get to BU. My back was sore from practice, and it was generally a horrible experience. -_- But then I grabbed a seat so all was fine with the universe once more.)
Anyway, it took an hour and twenty minutes to get to the Wellesley campus. About half an hour was spent on the bridge over the Charles. We inched forward at an abominably slow pace, as the massive traffic jam of tourists and spectators were rushing back to Boston after the races. (Did I mention I was standing throughout this ordeal?) I picked such an opportune time to take the bus, didn't I? -_-;;
On the other hand, I arrived at Wellesley, which had a gorgeous campus. And Tryo-chan's in a beautiful dorm building. I feel kind of disappointed with Greenough now. The Wellesley dorms look architecturally nicer than the Yard dorms too, which all have this monotonous sort of uniformity to them. (I mean, brick walls, dark green shutters, dark green doors...well, I guess I'm exaggerating, but sometimes it feels that all the dorms around the north side of the Yard look identical.) Still, our rooms are certainly much larger than theirs.
Their campus is really beautiful though. It has this kind of fairy-tale bubble feel to it. The trees were coming into full color, and there were these wide greens full of dried fallen leaves--I love crunching leaves in the fall. ^_^ Just before I left, Tryo-chan took me to the lake, which even at night looked spectacular. I can just imagine how nice it would be to see it by day with the trees reflected on the smooth surface of the water.
::sighs:: Such a lovely campus. I mean, Harvard has a nice campus too, I suppose, but to be frank, when I first saw it, I was kind of disappointed. L.P. and I went on the same tour, and we had these crestfallen expressions. "It's brick. Ugh." By the end of the tour, I had adjusted my perspective somewhat, but I have to admit, my original conception of a college campus was more like Wellesley.
Still, it's probably better this way. There's no room to spread all the buildings out like they are at Wellesley, and that means I only take ten minutes to walk to Vanserg for Korean section. ^_^
offtheshoulder, I'm so sorry I couldn't stop by to see you! Tryo-chan and I meant to visit, but we looked at the map and realized your dorm was on the other side of campus, and by then, it was 6:30 and I would have missed the bus if I walked all the way there. And oh, Liz, if you're reading this, I meant to call you too and tell you I was coming, but I must have typed in the wrong cell phone number, because I couldn't contact you at all. Apologies to everyone! I already promised Tryo-chan that I'd visit again in November, so I'll make sure to meet up with all of you then.
In other news, yesterday night I got my first kendo foot blister. ::feels vaguely proud:: I also finished Marmalade Boy, which is awfully cute and sad. Just like a Korean drama. I was on the phone with oniichan while I was reading it, and I sounded like a total sap, sniffling after every other page. (Not actually crying--it's not that tragic--but...awwww, so sad.) I want to see the anime now!

Date: 2003-10-19 03:47 pm (UTC)Well I haven't actually gone from one end to another, but I'd probably take around twenty minutes. But I walk NewYorker pace.
About the herbal medicines though, stuff like that is hard to explain because it uses terms that are untranslatable into Western medicine terms. So if some guy says that it balances the 'yin' and 'yang,' it sounds like mysticism but it's just that the active chemical ingredients haven't been isolated. Nyah~

Date: 2003-10-19 04:47 pm (UTC)I mean, the least you're supposed to do is say what goes into the medicine. Like, "This has ginseng and deer antlers and dates" etc. -_-

Date: 2003-10-18 07:20 pm (UTC)I like Harvard's brick buildings!!! And since you're a New Yorker, it shouldn't take you more than eight minutes to get to class from most areas, I would think.
If you had seen my dorm, your vision of a perfect Wellesley campus would have been shattered. (Did you see the Science Center!?)

Date: 2003-10-18 08:06 pm (UTC)And no, I didn't see the Science Center, but Tryogeru described it to me. Hey, don't ruin my image yet! ^_^
