Ad Mundo Exteriore,

I woke up this morning and went to the bathroom, where Susie told me that Saddam Hussein was captured. I was duly astonished and struck with the political implications for next year's presidential elections then returned to worrying about all the work I have to do today.

A few minutes ago, someone knocked on our doors and told us that Saddam Hussein was caught and that there was an emergency meeting in the common room. O_O Uh, common room? Okay...well, anyway, my roommate has a TV, so I'm listening to the special news reports as I'm typing this entry in my room.

Honestly, I'd be more, um, excited, but all I've been thinking is that George Bush's chances of being reelected have just gone up even further and that it'll be interesting to know how they identified him (he looks pretty wretched and very different). So depressing. Not that I'm not glad that Hussein's been captured--he should definitely go on trial for human rights violations and war crimes (I really wish the international judicial system was stronger than it is).

I wonder if the reconstruction effort is going to become even rockier, after this development. Oh well, I suppose our Spring 2004 symposium topic was well-chosen after all, though it needs a better name.

All right, back to indifference. I'm supposed to be thinking about PCR and restriction enzymes, and then maybe the famine in Ethiopia or free trade agreements, anyway.

Edit: Oh, so apparently, meeting in the common room for the press conference. Okay, that makes sense now.

...Tari
