Bad SF movies

Yesterday, I watched part of this really bad, bad SF movie on channel 5. I don't know the title; it was mainly about this war that humanity had with these insectoid alien creatures (aren't all SF movies like that?) and the main characters were this boy who joined up with the Mobile Infantry and this girl who joined up with the Fleet to fight the war. The insectoid creatures had just fired a meteorite towards Earth and wiped Buenos Aires off the map. Besides the obvious 9/11 analogies (of course, the movie may have been made before 9/11, but they probably showed it now because of 9/11), there were some glaring inconsistencies and errors with the plotline. And the one that bothered me most was the utter stupidity of sending the Manual Infantry to fight the war. The boy says resentfully at one point, "Fleet does the flying, M.I. does the dying." Isn't that the most ridiculous military strategy you've ever heard of? I mean, right now, we do everything to avoid committing ground troops. We rely more on missiles than close combat to achieve our strategic objectives. Why on earth would they not continue the same principle of warfare thousands of years in the future when they have even better weapons technology? Oy vey. And even more stupid, why risk high numbers of casualties (which by the way ended up happening in the movie) by arming your ground troops with nuclear weapons, hand grenades and machine guns? The range of nuclear weapons is too dangerous to be used by infantry; hand grenades and machine guns are hopelessly outdated. They should have developed chemical weapons that exterminated the aliens like roach spray and spread it across the home planet, keeping men out of reach in spacecraft. Argh, it still annoys me that they didn't have the foresight to think that in space warfare, you would probably keep the battles up in space. The fighting conditions were as primitive as WWII!
The aliens too didn't seem to have any weapons developed; instead, all their offensive capabilities were in their bodies. Are they really intelligent then? And why would they have the technology to shoot a meteorite at Earth if their other weaponry comes entirely from their natural biology? And why don't the scientists actually study the biology of the captured insects, instead of maniacally shooting at them with machine guns (as they did at one point in the movie)? This is beyond implausible.
I started watching because the whole insect situation reminded me of Ender's Game, but this was so stupid that after a few minutes of incredulous horror, I had to change the channel. Please, someone find the scriptwriter and put him out of his/her misery. What kind of deranged, unthinking mind could come up with such utter kuso? Hm, maybe the studio executives paid him/her to write it. In which case, someone should slowly torture those people at the stake. Oh and get the people in charge of broadcast programming at Fox too, since they're the ones who submitted the unsuspecting channel surfer to such utter nonsense.
I feel so violent now. Maybe I'll go code some more HTML for Ender's Jeesh.

Date: 2002-09-07 05:44 pm (UTC)I don't think you should take it too seriously. I had a fun time laughing at the death and carnage because I actually thought it was pretty lighthearted...then again, I'm pretty zoinky.
I liked the beginning and the end, and all the parts that had that "news flash" kinda thing. It was funny how they did that "The government wants YOU" kind of thing.
I did like how the make character's friend, the mind reader, wore this nice black plasti-leather trench coat at the end.
Also, a redeeming quality of the movie, was that at the end, the main character didn't be the "hero" and capture the brain bug, but it was someone else.
