Ad Mundo Exteriore,

Yesterday, I watched Gohatto, a Japanese film on the Shinsengumi, which Tryo-chan lent to me on CD. Now I know what she meant when she said that it was confusing--I'm not entirely sure what was going on or what exactly happened. All I know is that the catamite...uh, I mean, Kano Sozaburo was probably quite insane. I thought that he would be some kind of spy meant to infiltrate the ranks of the Shinsengumi and sow seeds of dissension and lust among them, but it turned out to not be political at all, but rather psychologically complicated in some obscure way that is beyond my comprehension. >_>

Oh well. Okita-sama was absolutely adorable, even in all three dimensions and out of the Peace Maker realm. ^_^ Sozaburo may be a pretty boy, but he had too much of a painted geisha look. The problem with real-life bishounen is that they may manage to be more beautiful than most girls, but they also look incredibly dumb. Have encountered several such examples while just walking through the Harvard campus. Presumably they are not actually dumb, but nevertheless, the serenely blank looks on their faces are kind of creepy. Kind of like those expensive dolls with eyelashes made from real human hair, et cetera. Anyway, Souji, or rather the actor who played him in the film, may not have measured up aesthetically to Sozaburo, but he certainly didn't look as artificial.

Oh, I also watched Kill Bill at the Science Center with [livejournal.com profile] tryogeru yesterday. It was enlightening--I've been seeing screencaps from this movie around on various forums for ages, and until now, I had no idea where they had come from. My favorite moment from the movie was probably when O-ren Ishii pattered down the table in her kimono, unsheathed her sword and promptly beheaded that yakuza boss who insulted her mixed blood--that juxtaposition was hilarious and so perfect. Second favorite moment has to be when Gogo comes out to fight the Black Mamba, and says, in this sweet, chipper voice, "Hi!" while carrying that mace-type weapon in her hands. Again, a perfect juxtaposition. Actually, the whole movie was really funny...or perhaps it's better to say, light-hearted. It takes itself seriously without actually taking itself seriously, if that makes any sense. And that picturesque staging of O-ren Ishii's death in the snow was really gorgeously done. Really just wonderful. I also liked the fragmented storyline--it really does seem to have been directed by a borderline schizophrenic. ^_^

Not for quite a while. My spring break begins the 27th, I think.

About Gohatto though, what did you think about that whole cata--ahem Kano/Souji thing that Hijikata-san was guessing at?

Myah. I would like it if they actually gave evidence for it. ;_; But it was so random and came up out of nowhere, and I went, "Wha--?!"

Oh. I actually liked Okita a lot more than Kano-kun. I mean... he had this lovely laughter, when he's sitting by the river, watching the children play and Hijikata-san goes to talk to him. I loved the way he told Hijikata-san the story he read on the book, about the scholar and the samurai. Well, he was my favourite character of the movie after all.

Actually, um, that was what I said too. ^_^;; I was trying to say that I didn't really like Kano, because he had that utter dumb pretty boy look that irritates me to no end. While Okita, on the other hand, was absolutely adorable. I watched the river scene with my friend, and we were squealing happily throughout the entire scene. ^____^ I also loved him telling the story too, although I didn't really understand how the story was meant to relate to the plot of the film.

Have to agree. That tune that the nurse (Ellie Driver) whistles has been stuck in my head since Saturday. ^_^;;
